If you’re going for a day hike. You will have to bring some stuff unless it’s just a mile or two. I don’t know about you but we prefer to not have our hands full during a hike. Its annoying and really a safety issue if the trail is anything more than flat and well kept. Roots and rocks can easily trip you and being able to catch yourself my prevent serious injury. You’re going to need a pack. Now sometimes you can use the same pack you use for backpacking. A back pack you used to travel or go to school could also work but isn’t the best option either. Getting a specific day pack for hiking allows for easier packing and more convenience on the trail. Below are our top hiking daypacks.
1 Osprey Talon 22
The Osprey Talon 22 is the perfect size for a day out on the trails. At 22 liters the pack is large enough to carry snacks emergency gear and an extra layer depending on season. The Hip belt is sturdy and hugs the hips well enough to keep excess weight off the shoulder leading to more enjoyable hikes and less fatigue. The breathable back panel will keep you cool in the summer. The talon has one main compartment with a mesh pocket within to keep keys, wallets and other small items from getting lost while on the trail.
2 REI Co-op Flash 22
The REI Co-op flash 22 is a perfect first day pack for those just getting into the outdoors. It is one of the more affordable options we have found, but that doesn’t mean it sacrifices on quality. The Talon 22 comes in a variety of colors to match any outdoor apparel you already have or soon to acquire. Just like our first choice at 22 liters the pack is small enough to be light and easy to scramble in while also holding anything you need for a day on the trails. There is a removable sit pad that is great for restign the legs at the top of a hike or stopping for a quick trail snack. Unfortunately the hip belt leaves something to be desired, while it does take some weight of the shoulders it doesn’t take as much as we would prefer.
3 Gregory Jade 28
The Gregory Jade is day pack from one of the great pack brands. The Jade 28 is one of the best for day hikes. Its a little larger at 28 liters but still small enough to not be oversized for a couple hour day hike. The U shaped zipper closure on the pack allows easy access. This feature is that main reason the jade 28 found itself so high on our list. Most of the packs in this size range do not have an opening of this size. The hip belt is alos more substantial and able to carry increased weight that may come with that increased size. But even if not packed to the brim, this hip belt will reduce fatigue during sunup to sundown day hikes.
4 Deuter Speed Lite 25
Deuter speed lite is a veristal day pack that is just as good at cycling through the city as out on a day hike. The styling of the bag with few straps or zippers allows it to be worn around the city just as easily as on the trail. The pack has impressive hip and shoulder strap pockets that are not normally found on packs of this size. Deuter was able to include these by allowing the shoulder strap to widen slightly. Giving just enough room for a small pocket. The hip belt is sufficient and supportive enough but just as most packs in this size you will have to be careful to not overload or else your shoulders will suffer.
5 Salomon XT 15 Bladder Pack
The Salomon XT 15 is a little different when compared to the other packs on this list. It is significantly smaller, best described as a cross between a running vest ( they can be used for day hikes also) and a day pack. Fits and wears like a running vest but with more storage. This is great for shorter day hikes in fair weather. Because of the structure of the pack you cant expect to carry anywhere neat as much weight or have the organizational features of a true day pack.
