There’s nothing that will ruin a night out in the great outdoors like a bad mattress. Poor sleep has to be the number two reason for cutting camping trips short right behind bad weather. When looking for a camping mattress you need comfort, ease of set up some packability but not as much as with backpacking sleeping pads. Hold on, pad or mattress what’s the difference? Simple answer mattresses are more comfortable. In this list we have the best camping mattresses. A thicker more comfortable and less packable sleeping apparatus for camping close to the car. If you’re looking for something more packable our sleeping pad list is here. Below are Trail Trialed’s top camping mattresses.
Hest Foamy Sleeping Pad
Yes its called a sleeping pad but to us is a camping mattress. No pumping, no uncomfortable materials, and best of all thicker than 2 t shirts tied together its a mattress end of story. Now that we have that put of the way the Hest Foamy Sleeping pa… Mattress is exactly what we look for when looking for a camping mattress. Of all the camping mattresses, the foamy is the best. At almost 4 inches thick it works well for any sleeping position. It store the foamy rolls up and is secured by 2 straps. The does make storage a little more difficult but the ease of set up is well worth the additional space needed. To setup the foamy only needs to be unrolled no pump needed.
REI Co-op Camp Dreamer XL
Needing a mattress that’s big enough for 2 and doesn’t require and hour of pumping. The Camp Dreamer XL is large enough for 2. Thick enough at 4 inches for any sleep position, devout side sleepers rejoice. Side sleeping is a good position at home but not exactly the best on hard ground, lots of sore shoulders and hips from sleeping pads that lose a little height during the night. While this mattress doesn’t completely inflate itself the self inflation does cut down on time. Unpack the Camp Dreamer from its duffle bag sized case let it sit for 20 minutes while setting up camp then just a few pumps with the included pump sack.
Exped MegaMat Duo Sleeping Pad
With the MegaMat Exped has a good option for any couples or families who need a little more space. We looked at the duo but the MegaMat comes in a few sizes all the way up to queen size. This should be plenty of space for hot summer nights when you don’t want to be all that close to your tentmates. At 4inches the MegaMat is thick enough for all shapes, sizes and sleep positions. Within 10 minutes of unpacking the Megamat will be self inflated and just need to be toped off with the top off pumps.
Therm-a-rest Neoair Topo Luxe
The Neoair Topo Luxe is getting closer to a sleeping pad but its still thick enough and comfortable enough to make the mattress list. Don’t mind a little inflation time and need to save a little space in the car the Neoair Topo Luxe. Comes with a pump sack but you can always bring a battery powered pump to speed up inflation. The stuff sack keep the Topo Luxe compact during transport and storage. The Topo Luxe is insulated to keep you warm on cold nights with its double layered baffles.
